It’s Time to Pick Up Your Nuc, Now What?
Our Nuc pickups are now in full swing. With a rough start this spring, we are all excited to get to beekeeping, and in many cases recover from winter losses. As you can see, we are busy bees getting everything sorted, and ready to go. When the sun is starting to set, the foragers are coming back home. This is why we have pickups set between 7pm and 9pm. This ensures that all of your bees are inside their home ready to be brought to their new yard.
We do not seal the boxes, as we don’t want them to over heat. We do get asked if the bees will fly out, and you may get a few curious ladies having a look around, but they will stay close to their box. If you are concerned about them getting out, especially if you are transporting them inside your car, you can place a blanket loosely over the box, and that will help keep them contained. We also sell Nuc Bags, that can be purchased at the time of pick up, and will gently place your nuc box inside. Putting them in the back of a pick up is recommended, but we understand it is not always possible.
Where do we go to pick up, and what do we do? You are going to come to our warehouse at 5029 County Rd 2 in Port Hope, and drive around to the back, where the loading dock is. You will then check in with one of our staff members, and confirm how many nucs you are picking up. You will want to pull up as close to the nucs as you are able, and if you choose you can help our staff load into your vehicle. You will want to bring any protective gear you feel you will need, as well as straps/tie downs that are appropriate for your vehicle.
Nuc Pickups Will Happen Rain or Shine.
Barring any extreme weather, and circumstances, (like our cold, late spring) nuc pickups will go ahead as scheduled. If there is an issue, you will be contacted, and you can always contact us with any questions you may have.
Do I need to feed my Nuc?
Your nuc will come with resources to help keep them going until they find their new forage area. However, we do recommend a pollen patty on top, just to give them that extra supply while they do look for forage. Once they find what they are looking for, they won’t need to be fed.
Can I shop and pick up extra equipment?
Of course you can. Our warehouse will be open late with limited staff to assist you. However, we do suggest if you have a large list that you order ahead of time, and we can have everything ready for you when you arrive for your nucs. Also, if you have questions about what you need, you can always email us and our beekeepers will be more than happy to answer your questions and guide you in the right direction. We want to make your nuc pick up as smooth and stress free as possible!
APRIL - the "getting ready" month.
Flowers are starting to bloom, trees are budding, and bees are starting to do short flights bringing in pollen and nectar where it's available.
