Todays blog will look at the month of May - the KEY month coming out of winter and going into spring.
MAY - the "critical" month
The hive will be bursting with activity. Pollen and Nectar flow are at it's highest and the queen will be reaching her greatest rate of egg laying. On a warm day frames can be removed (about 7*) and the overall health of the hive observed. Check for adequate food stores, good brood patterns and a growing bee population. If not already done, clean off the bottom board removing dead bees. When warm weather is established, remove entrance reducers. This is a good time for splits when the bee population is booming.
Check under frames and monitor for swarm cells, check mite levels and treat accordingly and check levels again. Add boxes if required.
APRIL - the "getting ready" month.
Flowers are starting to bloom, trees are budding, and bees are starting to do short flights bringing in pollen and nectar where it's available.
